Postdoctoral Research Associate
Global Aging and Community Initiative (GACI), Mount Saint Vincent University (Nova Scotia, Canada)

The Global Aging and Community Initiative (GACI) seeks a dynamic individual with an interest in conducting research related to religiosity as a determinant of health and a mediating factor in the frailty-mortality association. This position is jointly funded by the Geriatric Medicine Research (GMR), based at Dalhousie University/Nova Scotia Health Authority, under the direction of Dr. Kenneth Rockwood and Dr. Olga Theou, and the Global Aging and Community Initiative (GACI) at Mount Saint Vincent University, under the direction of Dr. Zachary Zimmer. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to both research centers focusing on research related to religion and health or frailty. This position is ideal for an individual interested in gaining experience conducting secondary analysis and publishing research related to religiosity and health.  The individual must be able to work across research groups with a diverse set of interests and should be well versed in quantitative methodologies. Proficiency in English is required. Applicants can be from any discipline. Familiarity and interest in gerontology, demography, or epidemiology is beneficial. 

Innovative work being done by the GMR team at Dalhousie University/Nova Scotia Health Authority includes development of tools and services to allow for a more responsive system of care for older patients, as well as investigation of the effects of social vulnerability on health and mortality. Research at GMR is focused on improving the health of older adults across all levels of frailty and of people with dementia. The GACI is a new research center with a mission to create new knowledge focused on the health and well-being of older persons worldwide through collaborative research across a broad global scientific community. This position will be partly supported by a Templeton Foundation grant entitled “Linking Spirituality and Religiosity to Life and Health Expectancy: A Global Comparative Study”.

The successful applicant will be expected to conduct independent research and be engaged in any other activities that promote the goals of both the GMR and GACI centers. The successful candidate will be based out of and report primarily to the GACI, but divide his/her time evenly between the two research centers. 

Qualifications:

  • Completed PhD at the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with quantitative data analysis and statistical software (SPSS, STATA, R, Excel, etc.).
  • A track record of research and publication.
  • Experience working on grant applications

Salary Range: $40,000 CAD/year for two years; successful candidate will be expected to apply for fellowship funding from external sources as eligible.
Start Date: August 1, 2017 or later
Duration of appointment: Two years.
