Civil society populations are now collectively used as booty and shields to settle supra-national geo-political disputes, be it for market or military positioning or material and territorial gain. As demographers, we get to examine the evidence. Civilian casualty rates have tripled in the century since WW1 from 25% to over 80%. How can we justify the plethora of institutions upholding the rule of law and fundamental rights when aerial bombardments against defenceless civilans seem to go unchallenged by all but the smallest NGOs?

Please contact me if you are working on this question and what it means for human, sustainable and equitable development.

As population scientists we should be at the forefront of international appeals to halt violence, beseigement and starvation between populations.

From a sustainability perspective, managing fertility and family size is essential for building stable communities. Do persecution and conflict  exacerbate fertility?
