This is the second edition of the training workshop on Social Media and Demographic Methods. The first part of this workshop will be about concepts and tools discussed during the PAA2016 edition (e.g., how to use APIs to access Twitter data and Facebook public pages). The second part will introduce new material, including how to access Facebook data for advertisers and how to leverage the data for demographic research. The workshop is suitable for participants with no prior experience as well as for those who attended the PAA2016 edition and want to reinforce what they have learned and gain exposure to new tools.

The workshop will focus on accessing Social Media data and analyzing them using computational and demographic methods. The workshop is intended to:

  • provide an introduction to tools like Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for collecting data from social media. Examples of applications will include Twitter, Facebook public pages, and Facebook Adverts Manager.

  • present examples of demographic and computational methods that can be used to gain insights from these data;

  • discuss recent developments in the emerging field of digital demography and favor communication and exchange of ideas among participants.

Format:

There will be a mix of hands-on guided exercises/tutorials and introductory presentations about key computational concepts as well as ongoing research projects in this area.

Software:
