The Department of Social Statistics and Demography at the University of Southampton invites applications for a Lectureship post in Social Statistics/Demography from candidates with a commitment to excellence in research and teaching.  

The position has been created to cover staff secondment and research leave. The appointment is for a fixed term of 2 years.  

Applications are welcome from outstanding candidates with experience in any aspect of demography or social statistics, but preference will be given to candidates who can contribute to the teaching of advanced quantitative methods. You must have a PhD (or nearing completion) or equivalent level qualification in social/applied statistics, demography or in a relevant subject area and be able to satisfy all the essential criteria detailed in the job description. 

 

You will be required to contribute to the teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate students in social statistics and/or demography, to coordinate and develop existing and new teaching modules, to contribute to the development of distance learning and internationalisation of our postgraduate and continuing professional development programmes in social/official statistics, to contribute to the supervision of postgraduate students, and to carry out administrative duties within the Department of Social Statistics and Demography and the Academic Unit of Social Sciences. You will also be expected to engage in advanced study or research, including the publication of research results in peer-reviewed international journals, and demonstrate leadership in seeking research funding.

 

The position is tenable from 1 September 2015.

 

The Department of Social Statistics and Demography at Southampton has world class research expertise in survey methodology, official statistics, statistical modelling, demography, global health and social policy, and takes a strategic role in the development and promotion of the use of quantitative methods in the social sciences. You will be expected to demonstrate expertise in one or more of these areas. The members of the Department contribute significantly to the research activities at the Statistical Sciences Research Institute, the ESRC Centre for Population Change, National Centre for Research Methods and Centre for Global Health, Population, Poverty and Policy.
