I am Emeritus Professor of Demography and a member of the Population Studies Group at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and also an Honorary Professor of the University of Cape Town.
I started my career in the software industry but worked from 1980 to 2021 in what was successively the Centre/Department of Population Studies/Health at LSHTM. My first degree is in social anthropology and I like to think of myself as a social scientist, although most of my work has been in quantitative demography. I did an MSc in Demography at LSE and completed a PhD at LSHTM on the estimation of adult mortality from data on orphanhood.
I have worked on methods for estimating adult mortality, the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and the global transition to low fertility.
Estimating adult mortality based on maternal orphanhood in populations with HIV/AIDS. Masquelier, B. and Timæus, I. M.; Population Studies, 2025; 79(2): 337-357.
Pathways to low fertility: 50 years of limitation, curtailment, and postponement of childbearing.Timæus, I. M. and Moultrie, T. A.; Demography, 2020; 57(1): 267-296.
