Jeffrey S. Passel, Senior Demographer, joined the Pew Research Center in January 2005. Research interests include the demography of Hispanics and immigrants, integration of immigrants and their impacts (fiscal, demographic, and social).  He has developed measures of immigration trends, focusing on estimates of unauthorized immigrants and components of change that are widely cited in debates over immigration. He also works on generational dynamics, population projections, defining racial/ethnic groups, and measuring census undercount.  Previous positions include Principal Research Associate at the Urban Institute (1989-2005) and positions at the Census Bureau (1974-1989) where he directed programs on population estimates, projections, and demographic methods for measuring census undercount.   Dr. Passel served on committees of the Population Association of America, several Panels of National Academy of Sciences, and on the Social Security Advisory Board’s Technical Panel on Assumptions and Methods. His degrees are from Johns Hopkins (PhD), University of Texas at Austin (MA), and MIT (BS).
