Professional Summary:

Emilio Zagheni is Director of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR), in Rostock, Germany, and affiliate faculty of the Department of Sociology at the University of Washington, Seattle, where he served as Training Director of the Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology. He received his Ph.D. in Demography (2010) and M.A. in Statistics (2008) from the University of California at Berkeley. Zagheni is currently President of the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS). In this role, he has been a strong supporter of open science, data and software, as well as an advocate for demographic training and for strengthened cooperation between regional population associations.

 

 At IUSSP, Zagheni chaired the Scientific Panels on Big Data and Population Processes (2015-2018) and on Digital Demography (2019-2022). Currently he serves as a member of the IUSSP Panel on Population Dynamics under Global Conflict and Climate Change (2022-2025). As part of his work with these panels, Zagheni has (co-)organized training and research activities that took place in all continents, favoring innovation, collaboration and interdisciplinary exchange, as well as expanding learning opportunities for students and early-career scholars.

 

 

Publications:

From a methodological perspective, Zagheni is best known for his work on combining digital trace data, traditional sources, and new forms of data collection, within solid statistical and formal demographic frameworks.  Substantively, his research has contributed to improve our understanding of migration processes, family and kinship dynamics, intergenerational transfers in aging societies, population and environment interlinkages, and the implications of technological transformations for health and well-being.  Below are five selected publications:
