Abstract
La démographie est la science qui a pour objet l’étude des populations humaines envisagée beaucoup plus d’un point de vue quantitatif. Au cœur des sciences sociales, elle traite des questions les plus épineuses qui se posent à la société mondiale. De l’antiquité à l’époque contemporaine, les problèmes de population n’étaient pas abordés de la même manière. Auparavant, ceux-ci étaient traités d’un point de vue politique, philosophique, moral, militaire ou social. A partir du XVe siècle cependant, les aspects économiques sont pris en considération, avec les travaux des mercantilistes et des physiocrates. L’analyse scientifique des phénomènes démographiques quant à elle ne commence véritablement qu’au XXIe siècle, avec la publication des résultats de recherches sur les questions de population. Dans les pays Africains et au Cameroun en particulier, la démographie existe désormais comme discipline scientifique. D’abord utilisés pour des fins de gouvernance, les questions démographiques sont aujourd’hui prises en considération dans les politiques de développement; divers organismes et instituts travaillant dans le domaine de la population ont été crées; la discipline est enseignée dans plusieurs Instituts et départements académiques du continent. Abstract (Translated)
Demography is the science that studies human populations mainly from a quantitative angle. It is central to the social sciences and addresses some of the most difficult questions facing global society. From antiquity until the contemporary period, population problems have not always been treated in the same manner. They used to be addressed from the political, philosophical, moral, military or social point of view. Since the 15th century, economic aspects have been considered, with the work of the mercantilists and Physiocrates. The scientific analysis of demographic phenomena only really begins in the 21st century, with the publication of research findings on population questions. In African countries, and Cameroon in particular, demography is now a scientific discipline. Although demographic matters were originally used for governance purposes, they are now taken into account in development policies; various bodies and institutes working on population have been established; the discipline is taught in a number of institutes and university departments in Africa. This study describes the history of demography in Cameroon.
