IIASA and the Joint Research Centres (JRC) of the European Commission have formed a partnership to establish a joint “Centre of Expertise on Population and Migration” to assess the implications of different migration scenarios on future population ageing in Europe, in a multi-dimensional way with a focus on age, gender, education and labor force participation. The Centre will also focus on scenarios (demographic, economic and environmental) for potential sending countries in Africa and Western Asia. The Centre will be lead jointly by Wolfgang Lutz (IIASA) and Delilah Al Khudhairy (EC-JRC). These five researchers will be based at IIASA and interact closely with another part of the team based in Ispra (Italy).

Candidates should have strong quantitative skills, and at least a master’s degree but preferably a doctorate in demography or nearby disciplines. Specific expertise in the modeling of population dynamics as well as substantive knowledge in migration, fertility, mortality/health, labor force participation or human capital/education is essential. The selected candidates will become part of a vibrant international team of researchers that combines the highest academic standards (and the possibility to publish in scholarly journals) with highest level science-policy interactions helping to provide the scientific basis for decision making on some of the greatest current European policy challenges.

Beginning as soon as possible in 2016, the successful candidates will be offered initial fixed-term contracts for one year with the possibility of extension for a further two years thereafter.

IIASA offers a competitive compensation and benefits package (moving and settlement allowances, educational grants for children of school age, and five weeks’ annual vacation). IIASA salaries are exempt from taxation in the host country of Austria but subject to the principle of income aggregation.
