Mid-term Review of the Asian and Pacific Ministerial Declaration on Population and Development

Bangkok, Thailand, 26-28 November 2018

From 26 to 28 November 2018, the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), in collaboration with UNFPA, will hold the Mid-Term Review of the Asian and Pacific Declaration on Population and Development in Bangkok. This regional intergovernmental review meeting was mandated by ESCAP Member States in 2013 in order to review progress on implementation of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), the key actions for its further implementation, and the 2013 Asian and Pacific Ministerial Declaration on Population and Development. Participation by Member States will be at senior political levels. Representatives of UN entities and civil society and experts will also take part. 

Following the review of progress in the area of population and development in Asia and the Pacific, there will be regional thematic discussions focusing on (a) population dynamics and inequality; (b) gender equality and sexual reproductive health and reproductive rights; and (c) population dynamics, vulnerable groups and resilience to climate change and disasters. An indicator framework for further monitoring progress on population and development issues in Asia and the Pacific will be discussed as well. ESCAP Member States have been asked to submit national reports on progress in the area of population and development which will be summarized in a synthesis paper. The expected outcome of the meeting will be a Chair’s summary which will be presented to the fifth session of the Committee on Social Development at ESCAP later in the week and also provide regional input to the global review of the ICPD Programme of Action at the 52nd session of the Commission on Population and Development in New York in 2019.
