Organized by the IUSSP Panel on Climate Change, Gender, and Migration.

Climate change is increasingly recognised as an important influence on human mobility, migration, and displacement. Yet migration responses to climatic stress vary considerably, shaped by socioeconomic, demographic, geographic, and institutional factors. Recent comparative research has highlighted these differences, while advances in migration measurement are opening new opportunities to examine mobility patterns across countries and over time.

New datasets, including sex-disaggregated estimates of international migration flows, offer promising tools for climate–migration research but also raise methodological questions concerning data quality, estimation uncertainty, and interpretation. Understanding the gender dimensions of climate-related mobility requires looking beyond aggregate migration patterns to examine social norms, household circumstances, unequal access to resources, and the experiences of those who remain in origin communities.

Against this background, this webinar of the IUSSP Scientific Panel on Climate Change, Gender, and Migration will bring together complementary perspectives on demographic measurement, comparative climate–migration evidence, and gender-sensitive research. The discussion aims to assess how emerging data and methods can inform research on climate-related mobility, identify conceptual and methodological priorities, and advance the Panel’s collaborative research agenda.
