Abstract

Title (Translated)
School enrolment of children from poor families: a secondary analysis of DHS 2007 data
Abstract (Translated)
According to MICS1 data, the net primary school enrolment ratio in the Democratic Republic of Congo was 56% in 1995, 51.7% in 2001, and still just 61% in 2007. With such a slow pace of change, the country is unlikely to achieve MDG 2. Hence the need to rethink current policies and strategies at this halfway mark in order to improve the parameters and ensure MDG achievement by 2015. The aim of this paper is to highlight the impact of households’ socioeconomic level on primary school enrolment - an indicator that has so far been neglected by decision-makers. Children’s place of residence also appears to have an effect on their school enrolment, this being especially noticeable in rural areas, where households are poorer than they are in towns and cities. Drawing on the DHS 2007 database, we will therefore run a multivariate analysis comparing poor and more prosperous households, in order to ascertain whether place of residence (urban or rural) and socioeconomic conditions have differing effects on children's school enrolment.
