Call for Papers:

International Seminar on Family Behaviour in East Asia and Southern Europe

Beijing, China, 23-24 October 2020

The seminar is organized by the IUSSP Panel on Family Behaviour in East Asia and Southern Europe, in collaboration with the Center for Social Research, Peking University.

Deadline for submission of abstracts31 May 2020.

This panel brings together researchers from East Asia and Southern Europe, and from around the world, to develop and empirically evaluate a broad, comprehensive set of questions focused on demographic similarities (and differences) between and within these two distinctive low-fertility regions. Focusing on these select regions and the countries comprising them enables the panel to contribute to a range of broader demographic questions central to research on how fertility and family change are related to gender, family ties, and economic uncertainty. The panel also seeks to advance our understanding of how these factors interact with each other and how these relationships differ across and within the two regions.

Online submissions:

We invite researchers to submit online, by 31 May 2020, a short 200-word abstract AND upload an extended abstract (2 to 4 pages, including tables) or a full paper which must be unpublished. Applicants will be informed whether their paper is accepted by 30 June 2020. Participants must submit their complete paper by 1 October 2020.

To submit and fill out the online submission form, please click here: ONLINE SUBMISSION FORM.

  • The seminar will be limited to a maximum of 20 completed papers.

  • Abstracts and papers must be written in English.

  • Submission should be made by the author who will attend the seminar. If the paper is co-authored, please include the names of your co-authors in your submission form (in the appropriate order).

  • In addition to dissemination through posting on the member-restricted portion of the IUSSP website, seminar organizers will explore possibilities for publishing the papers as an edited volume or a special issue of a journal. Papers submitted should be unpublished and, as for a journal or an edited book, authors, by submitting a paper, agree they will not propose it for publication to another editor until the committee makes a decision with regard to their possible publication.

  • There is no funding to support travel to the seminar. Participants will need to cover the cost of their participation (including travel and accommodation expenses) in the seminar.
