Description

The digital revolution continues to reshape demography, both by influencing demographic behaviour and by transforming the data, methods and questions of demographic research. Artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and new forms of data create important opportunities. Yet, changing access to data and a growing reliance on commercial technologies raise questions about quality, bias, ethics, transparency, reproducibility, equity and sustainability.

Building on the success of the IUSSP Panels on Big Data and Population Processes (2015–2018), Digital Demography (2019–2022), and Digital and Computational Demography (2023–2026), this panel will foster a rigorous, equitable and open international community in digital and computational demography, AI, and Open Science. It will promote responsible uses of AI and digital trace data, critical comparison with established demographic methods and sources, and research practices that remain transparent, sustainable, reproducible and trustworthy as technologies and data infrastructures change.
