Panel on New Challenges in Population and Development
Terms of Reference
This Scientific Panel’s main objective is to organize high level meetings of population scientists and policy makers to review research on the relationship between population and development and ensure population issues are sufficiently taken into account by policy makers.
Activities and meetings will focus on two themes:
1. The meaning of population and development nowadays. A review of the traditional debate on population and per-capita income growth with new approaches on human development, integration of the rights perspective stemming from the UN Conference Cycle with economic development, integration of state social policies with development.
2. Topics that were not considered for the ICPD-Cairo or that present a different nature nowadays compared with 1995, for instance, ageing, international migration, fertility (including below replacement in developing countries), gender, environment and climate changes.
