Chair of Excellence in Population Sciences

Bordeaux University and the “Individuals, Populations and Societies” (iPOPs) Laboratory of Excellence are creating a Chair of Excellence in population sciences for a period of 3 years. The prospects of maintaining this position will be considered at the end of this period.

The research work conducted by the holder of the Chair will focus on inequalities, the factors contributing to them, their implications and their formation during youth and early adult life. These inequalities will be addressed more particularly in terms of their interactions with learning and education processes, participation in the labor market and social citizenship, the basis of the current scientific program of COMPTRASEC. Familiarity with large-scale monitoring operations of cohorts and panels of young people will therefore be preferred, and previous research experience in such areas will be particularly welcome.

The holder of the Chair of Excellence will contribute to developing teaching courses in the areas of population sciences and quantitative methods applied to human and social sciences.

This position is open to holders of a PhD in demographics or a related subject (in sociology, political science, public health or economics) of relevance to population sciences, with at least three years of experience of teaching and postdoctoral research in one or more research institutions (public – such as a Public Scientific and Technological Establishment (EPST) – or private), Universities or Foundations. Applicants must also provide evidence of experience supervising young researchers and organizing and managing funded research projects. Their professional background should also include experience of international mobility.

The holder of the post will be employed by Bordeaux University but will share their research time between the INED (http://www.ined.fr/) and COMPTRASEC (Bordeaux University-CNRS; http://comptrasec.u-bordeaux.fr/) on terms that will take all possible account of the personal obligations of the holder and the requirements of the ongoing research programs. The holder of the Chair of Excellence will receive material assistance to help organize their work in these two locations (installation allowance, housing allowance for Paris, etc.). The net annual salary will be around €40,000. The material requirements of the position will be in line with the usual terms of Chairs of Excellence (integration of young researchers, financing expenditure relating to execution of research programs, international mobility, organization of seminars and workshops, etc.). The working language will be French but fluent professional English will be indispensable.

Anyone interested in the position should submit their application by 15/07/2016, comprising a full résumé, a description of their research interests (achievements and projects, 10 pages max.) and two reference letters, to christophe.bergouignan@u-bordeaux.fr.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to come to Bordeaux to be interviewed by a scientific committee.

COMPTRASEC was founded by specialists in labor and employment law. In 2011, the team was joined by the teaching and research staff of Bordeaux University in demographics (IEDUB). The center is a Mixed Research Unit (UMR) of the University and the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). The team includes almost 30 research and teaching staff, 8 associate researchers and 40 doctoral students and has its premises at the Bordeaux University site in Pessac. Research at COMPTRASEC is structured around the subject of social citizenship with two main focuses: conditions of social citizenship (integrity-health, autonomy-resources, inequalities-discrimination) and spaces of social citizenship (companies, local territories, spaces of confrontation).

The Institut National d’Etudes Démographiques (French Institute for Demographic Studies - INED) is a research body specializing in population studies and a partner of the academic and research world nationally and internationally. It has the status of a Public Scientific and Technological Establishment and is based on its own site in Paris. The INED is involved in over 70 multi-year research projects. Over 150 researchers work in its 10 research units, including 50 permanent staff and over forty associate researchers. The units also host doctoral and postdoctoral students training in research by research. One of its specific features is that for certain projects, the INED produces its own surveys. The Institute places the data it collects at the disposal of the scientific community.
