My research interests have been in social change, particiularly change that diffused through social networks.  My initial research focused on the decline in fertility in western Europe, 1870-1960. Subsequently, I have focused on local responses to the promotion of fertility control in Kenya and Malawi, and, most recently, local responses to the AIDS epidemic in Malaw as well as the responses of international and national organizations to the epidemic.
