I am Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Geography and Director of the International Population Center at San Diego State University. I am also Clinical Professor of Global Public Health at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine, a Senior Fellow of the California Council on Science and Technology, and a Research Associate of the Broom Center for Demography at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I have published more than 130 papers and chapters in peer-reviewed journals and books, and have authored or co-authored numerous books, including the best-selling text in the field of population studies, now in its 12th edition. My research has been funded by grants from private and public sources, including the Andrew Mellon Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
