Professional Summary:

I hold a PhD in Demography and Population Studies, MSc (Med) in Epidemiology & Biostatistics, MSc in Population Studies, and a BSc (Hons) in Statistics.  I also hold certifications in many specialized population, health, development, and management training programmes. Since 1988, I have pursued a career in the population and public health fields. I am currently an Associate Professor and Head of the Epidemiology & Biostatistics division at the School of Public Health, University of the Witwatersrand, a member of the Global Accrediting Body for TEPHINET and a Director at the BAMMISHO Health and Demographic Surveillance node in South Africa. My research focus is on promoting the sexual and reproductive health and well-being of the African populations, particularly, the maternal, newborn and child health continuum using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. My future research interest is in applying implementation and quality improvement sciences to SRH research.

2016-20 The Ministry for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation of the Netherlands (Internal ID 29312) to the SRHR-HIV Knows No Borders Consortium, led by International Organization for Migration (IOM). The project, aimed to improve Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) and HIV outcomes among adolescents, young people & sex workers in ten migration-affected communities in the six Southern Africa countries of South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique. Amount: EUR 11.1 million. Oct 2016 – Dec 31 2020.

This migration and health follow up study aims to highlight health care requirements of migrants as well as study the health and socio-economic consequences of migration by following up migrants leaving the Agincourt HDSS.
