IUSSP at the 2015 PAA Annual Meeting

At the recent Annual Meeting of the Population Association of America (PAA) in San Diego, 30 April-2 May 2015, the IUSSP organized a regular session on “Demography, Demographers and the Data Revolution” as well as a side meeting dedicated to the Laureate ceremony in honour of the 2015 IUSSP Laureate Cheikh Mbacke. The IUSSP also had a booth, which it shared with other regional associations.

Session 170 on “Demography, Demographers and the Data Revolution”

The session was chaired by Sunita Kishor (DHS Program, ICF International) and speakers were: Tom A. Moultrie (University of Cape Town), Suzana M. Cavenaghi (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística - IBGE) and Sabrina Juran (UNFPA) as well as Diego Iturralde (Statistics South Africa), who presented a paper by Pali Lehohla (Statistics South Africa), who was unable to attend the PAA. The session offered an opportunity for population scholars to learn a bit more about the Data Revolution, how they can and why they should get involved.

IUSSP Booth, shared with the regional population associations.

IUSSP Council members and staff present at the PAA’s Annual Meeting took turns at the booth, sharing the opportunity to meet with IUSSP members and chairs of IUSSP Panels, recruit new members, and advertise the forthcoming conference in Cape Town. Sharing the booth with the regional associations also helped reinforce the relations between the different organizations.
