Presenters of papers and posters selected for IPC2021 should register by 15 October. A reduced fee will be available for attendees. IUSSP Elections Elections for the 2022-2025 Council and the 2025 Committee on Nominations began on 15 September. Eligible members who have not received their ballot (sent by email) should contact the IUSSP at iussp2021elections@iussp.org. Members can vote until 27 October but are encouraged to vote early. IUSSP Laureate 2021 IUSSP Laureate ceremony for Zeng Yi This webinar in honour of Zeng Yi will take place on 21 October at 12 pm UTC. Frans Willekens, Harvey Jay Cohen, James Vaupel and Lei Xiaoyan will pay tribute to Zeng Yi’s career and achievements. Illustrations of the impact of Zeng Yi’s research will be provided by Jiehua Lu drawing on the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Study (CLHLS) and Feng Qiushi and Tirza Aidar on ProFamy. Would you like one of your colleagues to be honoured for their decisive contribution to the advancement of demography and population research? Do not hesitate to round up support and propose a nomination for the 2022 IUSSP Laureate award. Deadline for nominations is 1 November 2021. Data Revolution activities Innovative Use of Social Media for Remote Sensing and SDG Monitoring The IUSSP Panel on Digital Demography will hold this session at the UN World Data Forum on 5 October 2021 at 13:00 UTC (15:00 CET). The session introduces novel, not-so-obvious aspects of using social media data that go beyond simplistic tweet counting or sentiment analysis. The goal of the session is to enable the flow of ideas from the latest advances and experiences to a diverse audience. IUSSP Panel activities International Migration Panel activities The Panel on International Migration pursued its activities to promote a World Migration Survey, holding a session at the 5th Asian Population Association Conference, 3-5 August 2021. The Panel chair, Ellen Percy Kraly, also participated in July in the “Voluntary National Review” process of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), organized by the United Nations Network on Migration, where she highlighted the policy relevance of demographic research on international migration. IPC2021 Countdown Events Geoprocessing and Spatial Analysis This training workshop was organized on 10 August 2021 by Igor Cavallini Johansen (University of Campinas), on behalf of the IUSSP Early Career Taskforce. (Watch a recording of the training session) Climate Change and Population Dynamics This webinar was jointly organized by IUSSP, PERN and EAPS on 16 September 2021. The webinar was moderated by Raya Muttarak, Susana Adamo and Alex de Sherbinin and panelists included Joan Ballester, Kathryn Grace, Clark Gray, Wolfgang Lutz and Landy Sánchez. (Watch a recording and download the presentation slides and Q&A) Debate: The wife wants no more births… The IUSSP Scientific Panel on Couples' Reproductive Health and Fertility will hold a debate on 8 November 2021 on the topic: “The wife wants no more births, but the husband does. Can one say that her subsequent pregnancy is unwanted?”. Debaters will be Suzana Cavenaghi, Sunday Adedini, Francis Dodoo and K.G. Santhya The debate will be moderated by Ambrose Akinlo and Neetu John will provide a synthesis. Networking event: Your career after a PhD? Are you currently pursuing or have recently defended your PhD thesis? Are you wondering about your professional options, both in and outside academia? Come and discuss challenges and opportunities with early career colleagues who have successfully made this transition. These sessions are organized by the IUSSP Early Career taskforce. Five new members and 14 new Student Associates joined the IUSSP between 1 June 2021 and 1 September 2021. (See list) Regional population associations The next European Population Conference (EPC 2022) will convene from 29 June to 2 July 2022. EPC 2022 is organized by the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS) in collaboration with the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) and the University of Groningen. Deadline for submissions: 1 November 2021. The 5th Asian Population Association (virtual) conference took place from 3 to 5 August 2021. The APA2021 conference website provides access to the programme and videos of certain session. The APA is currently holding an election for its 6th Council (2022-2024) Other announcements 7th Dr.K.E. Vaidyanathan Memorial Lecture The Indian Association for Social Sciences and Health (IASSH) in collaboration with Institute of Economic Growth (IEG) organized the 7th Dr. K.E. Vaidyanathan Memorial Lecture on 25 June 2021. The Lecture was delivered by Prof. Monica Das Gupta (University of Maryland) on the theme - Epidemic Control in India: re-focusing public health services for better outcomes. (Watch the video recording of the Memorial Lecture) China Population and Development Studies China Population and Development Studies (CPDS) is the flagship journal of the China Population Association, hosted by the China Population and Development Research Center under the National Health Commission of China. Collaborating with Springer Nature since 2018, this quarterly journal encompasses a wide variety of latest research to population and development issues in China including original articles, policy commentaries, survey reports, and comparative studies. CPDS welcomes submissions to the journal - read more. Population Early-Career Researcher Prize Population is a quarterly scientific journal published in English (Population-E) and in French (Population-F) by INED. The Population Early-Career Researcher Prize 2022 is open to PhD students and young researchers working in the field of population studies and will be awarded to the most outstanding original paper submitted to the competition jury. Deadline for submission: 5 November 2021. Indian Journal of Population and Development Indian Journal of Population and Development is a new, open access journal, published online twice a year. It seeks to advance the understanding about the interaction between population factors and different dimensions of development in a variety of social, economic, cultural and environmental settings. The first issue is available here. Check out the new website for IUSSP's news magazine. N-IUSSP aims to disseminate scientific findings from population research carried out all over the world. Demographic trends and their implications, current and emerging population issues and policy implications are discussed in rigorous but plain language.
