The Standing Committee on Demographic Terminology will continue IUSSP’s long-standing commitment to providing authoritative definitions of concepts, measures, and indicators used in population research. The Committee will publish and maintain dictionaries, vocabularies, and other documents in formats best suited to the needs of population scientists, students, the providers of official statistics, other scientific domains, and the general public. Whenever possible, terms will be defined in multiple languages to serve IUSSP’s global audience. Documentation will be published in both human and machine-readable forms to respond to emerging standards, such as FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable)

New multilingual Ontology of Demography - Help needed from experienced demographers
The IUSSP Standing Committee on Demographic Terminology seeks help editing and updating a new multilingual Ontology of Demography. The new ontology builds on many years of work by IUSSP members from the Multilingual Dictionaries of Demography first published in 1958 to Demopaedia, the online encyclopedia. The Ontology of Demography includes more than 1,600 terms in a machine-actionable format with definitions in fifteen languages. We need help from experienced demographers to update definitions and describe relationships between terms.

Survey on multilingual demographic dictionaries
The IUSSP Standing Committee on Demographic Terminology intends to create a vocabulary of demographic terms consistent with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable), which will provide authoritative definitions of demographic terms in a form accessible by both humans and machines. A short survey was sent to popuation scientists around the world for them to share their ideas and suggestions. The deadline to respond is 30 June.

Technical Support for a FAIR Vocabulary of Demography
The IUSSP seeks partners for the creation of a Multilingual FAIR Vocabulary of Demography. The new Vocabulary will provide authoritative definitions of demographic terms in a form accessible by both humans and machines consistent with emerging standards for the semantic web.
