Starting 1 January 2026, the new Council will include Laura Rodriguez Wong (President), Reiko Hayashi (Vice President), Anne Goujon (Secretary General & Treasurer) and Council members Visseho Adjiwanou, Ayaga Bawah, Aude Bernard, Georgina Binstock, Grace Cruz, Sara Curran, Albert Esteve, Ann Moore and Nico van Nimwegen. IUSSP General Assembly on 13 November ![]() The IUSSP held its quadrennial General Assembly virtually on 13 November 2025, bringing 130 members together online to reflect on achievements from the past four years and to preview priorities for the next term. The second half of the meeting featured 10 breakout rooms where members could exchange with the IUSSP Panel members. For those unable to attend the General Assembly, a recording and a summary are available, along with all the Panel reports and other background documents.
IUSSP Awards 2025 Laureate ceremony for France Meslé ![]() The Laureate Award ceremony in honour of France Meslé was held on 7 October in hybrid format, at the French Institute for Demographic Studies (INED) and online. The ceremony included speeches by Magali Barbieri, Vladimir Shkolnikov, Giancarlo Camarda, Jenny Garcia, Géraldine Duthé, Maria Eugenia Cosio Zavala and Pavel Grigoriev. IUSSP activities UNFPA-India congratulates IUSSP at IASP annual conference At the 46th Annual Conference of the Indian Association for the Study of Population (IASP), held 27–29 November 2025 in Kolkata, India UNFPA-India formally felicitated the IUSSP for receiving the 2025 United Nations Population Award (Institutional Category). A panel session brought together a group of IUSSP members from India to reflect on IUSSP’s unique role in supporting population science. ![]() The IUSSP was present at the International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) that took place in Bogotá, Colombia, 3-6 November 2025, providing an opportunity for IUSSP members to engage with the global Family Planning community. The IUSSP Panel on Rethinking Family Planning Measurement with a Reproductive Justice and Rights Lens organized a session on "New Tools and Approaches for Measuring Family Planning and Reproductive Health". Chinese versions of the Online Multilingual Demographic Dictionaries ![]() The IUSSP is pleased to announce the release of the Chinese versions of the Online Multilingual Demographic Dictionaries, now accessible through the Demopaedia platform. The project includes two Chinese variants—one for Mainland China (Simplified Chinese) and one for Taiwan (Traditional Chinese)—reflecting linguistic practice and terminology differences across Chinese-speaking regions. Their addition marks an important expansion of this long-standing international reference resource. The Demopædia dictionaries, available both in web format and as printed books, are released under the Creative Commons ShareAlike license. Age-It and the promise of positive demography. Members News Ellen Kraly receives Excellence in International Migration Scholarship Award Ellen Percy Kraly, Co-chair of the IUSSP Panel on Priorities in International Migration Research, was honored with the prestigious Center for Migration Studies (CMS) award for Excellence in International Migration Scholarship. The award was bestowed at CMS’s annual gala in New York on 17 November. Earlier that day, Ellen Kraly delivered the keynote address, “Bearing Witness: International Migration Studies, Scholars and Students”, at CMS’s 2025 Academic & Policy Symposium. Guillermina Jasso recipient of the 2025 ISJR Lifetime Achievement Award Congratulations to Guillermina Jasso for receiving the 2025 ISJR Lifetime Achievement Award given biennially by the International Society for Justice Research (ISJR) "to honor distinguished lifetime contributions to the scientific study of justice and for efforts to advance justice as a field of study." Jasso is the first sociologist to win the award. In July 2025 she delivered the Award Lecture at the ISJR biennial conference in Seattle, Washington. The title of the award lecture was “From Foundations of Justice Analysis to Current and Future Challenges." Read more on Guillermina Jasso and the ISJR award.
• Farhat Yusuf (1940–2025) Farhat Yusuf, long-time IUSSP member, died in Sydney, Australia on 14 October, aged 85. Born in 1940 in Delhi, in what was then British India, Farhat Yusuf first moved to Pakistan and then to Australia. He worked for Macquarie University for over 40 years, playing a major role in the development of its ground-breaking undergraduate program in Demography. He chaired the IUSSP Scientific Panel on Business Demography (2007-2009). Nine new Members and 6 new Student Associates joined the IUSSP between 1 September and 30 November 2025. Call for Advances in Population Research Sessions at EPC 2026 - Bologna The European Population Conference 2026 will convene in Bologna, Italy, 3-6 June. EPC 2026 offers various sponsorship opportunities in the scientific and social program, including a limited number of special sessions. These "Advances in Population Research" sessions allow research projects and programs as well as organizations to highlight and raise awareness of groundbreaking research and discuss novel findings in the regular conference program, and support EPC 2026 and EAPS. Proposals for these sessions should be submitted to EAPS (eaps@nidi.nl) by 1 January 2026. ![]() The Asian Population Association (APA) is pleased to announce that its 7th Asian Population Association Conference (7th APAC) will be held in November 2026 in Hanoi, Viet Nam. The conference is being organized in collaboration with the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA) and the Vietnam Population Association (VNPA). Further details on the conference theme, program, key deadlines, and participation guidelines will be posted soon on the APA website. Interested scholars, practitioners, and students are encouraged to follow forthcoming announcements at www.asianpa.org. 2026 ALAP congress in San Jose, Costa Rica The XII Congress of the Latin American Population Association (ALAP) will take place in San José, Costa Rica, 24-28 August 2026 on the theme "New Frontiers: Demography, Digital Revolution, Democratization of Information and Dialogue in the Americas". (Read more on the ALAP website) Other Announcements Notas de Población - A Latin American Journal on Population Studies, published by ECLAC Notas de Población is a scientific journal published biannually by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), with articles either in Spanish or English.
