POPGRID Data Collaborative - new tools for data comparison

The POPGRID Data Collaborative brings together the major producers of gridded population  and human settlement data, as well as key users and stakeholders, to coordinate efforts and better respond to user needs. POPGRID is pleased to announce the launch of a website that guides users on the products available and their characteristics (including comparison tables), and a map tool (POPGRID Viewer) that enables visual and quantitative comparisons among data sets.

POPGRID viewer provides a four-panel display of six different data sets: CIESIN's Gridded Population of the World (GPWv4.10) 2015; ORNL's Landscan 2015; WorldPop's WorldPop 2014; JRC-CIESIN's Global Human Settlement (GHS-Pop) 2015; ESRI's World Population Estimate (WPE) 2016; and Facebook-CIESIN's High Resolution Settlement Layer (HRSL) 2015. A single-panel mode provides metadata on input data, and allows users to draw a polygon or upload a shapefile to generate a table and chart with population totals for all six data sets, providing side-by-side comparison of population estimates.

POPGRID is supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and underwritten by the NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC) managed by CIESIN at Columbia University. Major participants are included on the Find Data page.
