IUSSP 3-Panel mini-Conference

Funchal, Madeira, 12-15 July 2022

 

 

This IUSSP mini-conference is organized by three Scientific Panels of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) – the Panel on Family Planning, Fertility and Urban Development, the Panel on Contraceptive Transition Theories: Models for Contemporary Patterns of Use, and the Panel on Abortion Research - in collaboration with the Portuguese Association for Demography and with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

 

The conference will take place during the week of 11-15 July 2022 in Funchal, Madeira (Portugal) at the Vida Mar Resort HotelIt will bring together approximately 80 scholars, policy experts, and donors from around the globe to meet to present and discuss the latest research by IUSSP scientific panels and next steps for future research on key topics related to family planning. The event is funded by grants made to the IUSSP from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support the work of three IUSSP Scientific Panels whose mandates are to further knowledge on policy-relevant research for urban family planning, unintended pregnancy measures and population-level contraceptive transitions. The conference will support each panel in furthering their own research agenda and in leveraging the work and perspectives of the other panels and providing key discussion and networking opportunities for established and early career population scientists from across the globe engaged in family planning and reproductive health research. A key focus will be on engaging the cohort of early career fellows conducting research to engage with urban policy makers on family planning and urban development in sub-Saharan Africa.. 


The conference will be organized around three themes: 


  • Family Planning, Fertility and Urban Development

  • Contraceptive Transition Theories: Models for Contemporary Patterns of Use

  • Unintended Pregnancy and Key Outcomes—Abortion and Unplanned Births: Improvements in Measurement and New Evidence
