IUSSP Council meeting

An IUSSP Council meeting was held in Washington, D.C on 2-3 April 2016, just after the annual meeting of the Population Association of America (PAA). In addition to reporting on the year's activities, the Council discussed two major issues: the preparation of the next International Population Conference, to be held in Cape Town from 29 October to 4 November 2017, and the future prospects of the Union, given the increasing difficulty in raising funds. Survey of IUSSP members

It seems like this time of year is survey time with several associations sending out membership surveys. We hope you won’t mind filling out one more. This survey will better inform our consultants’ review of IUSSP’s business plan. Before making their recommendations, they want to hear IUSSP members’ views about how IUSSP should evolve and improve its services to the population community. The survey was sent out to all current and past members via Survey Monkey on June 17th.  The survey takes 5-10 minutes to fill out. Please reply as soon as possible. (Read more)


UN General Assembly Summit on large movements of refugees and migrants

The UN General Assembly will host a High-level Meeting on 19 September 2016 to address large movements of refugees and migrants. In preparation for the 19 September Summit, informal hearings with civil society will be held on 18 July. IUSSP has been selected as one of the 25 organizations to serve on the Steering Committee. IUSSP Laureate award ceremony for Ron Lee

The Laureate award ceremony, featuring a Symposium on Ronald Lee's Contributions to Demography with presentations by David Lam, Jennifer Johnson-Hanks and Andrew Mason, took place at 2016 PAA Annual Meeting.  (Read more)

Would you like to see a mentor or colleague honoured for their decisive contribution to the advancement of demography and population research? If they are an IUSSP member, do not hesitate to round up support and propose a nomination for the 2017 IUSSP Laureate award. This is a reminder that the deadline to submit a bid for the 2021 International Population Conference – 15 December 2016 – is coming soon. On the road to Cape Town 2017

Preparation for the 2017 International Population Conference (IPC) continues. France Meslé and Mary Ellen Zuppan travelled to South Africa to meet with host country organisers to review preparations for the Conference. The trip coincided with the 5th ISIbalo Conference of African Young Statisticians, hosted and organized by Stats SA. (Read more)

The IUSSP Panel on Big Data and Population Processes also organized a Research Workshop on Social Media and Demographic Research - Applications and Implications in Cologne, Germany, on 17 May 2016, as a side event at the 10th International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM-16). Registering and counting the population

The IUSSP Scientific Panel on Historical Demography and the Department of Demography, NEPO-UNICAMP organized an international seminar on “Registering and Counting the Population – the production and exploration of census information from early modern times to the end of the 20th century”, in Campinas - São Paulo, Brazil, 19-21 May 2016. Communicating on the demographic dividend in Africa

The IUSSP Network on Strengthening Demographic Training in Francophone Africa (FraNet) organized a workshop on “Communicating on the demographic dividend in Africa for policy makers and journalists” in Mbalmayo, Cameroun, 24 mars 2016. (Read more)


Demographic data in sub-Saharan Africa & the SDGs

DEMOSTAF (Demography Statistics for Africa), the IUSSP & the French Institute for Demographic Studies (INED) organized a scientific workshop on 31 May 2016 in Paris, France entitled “The challenges of demographic data in Sub-Saharan Africa in the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”. Its purpose was to give an overview of the challenges and identify levers to overcome these constraints. (Read more)

UN Population Award

Carmen Barroso, Regional Director of International Planned Parenthood Federation, Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF/WHR), is the Laureate of the 2016 United Nations Population Award. The award is scheduled to be presented at the United Nations on 23 June.  (Read more)

Regional population associations 
IUSSP at the 2016 PAA Annual Meeting

The 2016 Annual Meeting of the Population Association of America (PAA) was held in Washington, D.C., from 31 March to 2 April 2016. The IUSSP had a booth (shared with regional population associations) and organized its Laureate ceremony and two very well attended side meetings. (Read more)


2016 European Population Association

The 2016 European Population Conference will be held in the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany from 31 August to 3 September 2016. The IUSSP will hold a booth and advertise its 2017 Conference. The IUSSP Panel on Big Data and Population Processes will organize a training workshop on Web and social media for demographic research. (Read more)


2016 ALAP & ABEP Congress, Foz do Iguaçu

The VII Congress of the Latin American Population Association (ALAP) will be held together with the XX Congress of the Brazilian Population Association (ABEP) from 17 to 22 October 2016 in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil. Margaret Levenstein named director of ICPSR

The University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research (ISR) and the Governing Council of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) announced that Maggie Levenstein has been appointed as ICPSR’s next director. ICPSR is the largest archive of digital social science data in the world. (Read more)


In the era of transnational migration

The Mahidol Migration Center (MMC) will hold its 4th Regional Conference at the Institute for Population and Social Research (IPSR), Mahidol University, Salaya 28-30 June 2016. The theme of the conference, “In the Era of Transnational Migration”, incorporates a broad range of topics including trends in migration within and outside of the ASEAN region, social and economic aspects of migration, and regional and international migration policies. (Read more)
