Little is known about the motives and extent of adolescents' participation in the labour force. One important factor is family economic constraints. The numbers and proportions of working adolescents reflect important demographic shifts. In the last four decades, rural-urban migration has been dramatic across the world. For example, the rural young population has been "pushed" to the cities in hope of jobs and services. And the number of adolescents working is expected to increase in the decades ahead. The contributions of this Committee would be to document the different pathways through which young people move to adulthood. Country comparisons may help identify factors that may be pervasive and not readily recognised otherwise. It will investigate the adolescent life course and their expectations in the transition to adult related to their reproductive health, economic roles and parenthood. Finally, it will document and discuss services that may be used to enhance young people’s life.
